My thoughts while making this piece were about how different cultures in the world define masculinity. For example, many men have been taught to always stay strong and not show a lot of emotions. For me, modern masculinity is the opposite, and I thinks it is slowly changing in many ways around the globe. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, “machismo” (the name on the artwork) is defined as “male behavior that is strong and forceful and demonstrates very traditional ideas about how men and women should behave.” The name on the artwork is meant to be kind of ironic, and I wanted to show a more up-to-date picture of today’s modern man. As a result, I desired to use purple and shiny metallic sprays, which are not typically associated with masculinity but are more acceptable for men nowadays. I thinks that in Norway, it is more acceptable than ever for a man to be in touch with his own feelings, but that there is still a long way to go. It has been more spoken about in the media about the high suicide rate for young men in Norway lately and how important it is to take care of your mental health. This artwork is made with acrylics and metallic spray paint on canvas with a gloss varnish spray finish.
It is an original painting and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
